FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSWhat do you accept as reference photos?
The higher the quality of the reference photo, the more realistic the drawing can be. If we are trying to work from a blurry or slightly out-of-focus photo, it can be difficult to determine certain details like the direction or length of the fur. It's these small details that help improve realism in drawings.
If the photo you really want to have drawn is not very high quality, it can be helpful to provide additional higher quality photos that we can use for a reference in terms of fur patterns, coloring, etc. At this time, we are not offering portraits that include backgrounds, so please bear that in mind when choosing the photo(s) you submit. What is the typical wait time once I've commissioned a portrait?
Since we are a small business offering other services alongside portraits - plus the business owner/artist works another job - the wait time on commissions can vary depending on our work schedule, the type of portrait requested, and the number of other commissions currently scheduled to be completed. When you reach out to us, we will be able to give you an estimate on the wait time.
Why the difference in pricing between graphite and colored pencil portraits?
While both types of portrait require hours of dedicated work to bring them to life, colored pencil portraits require considerably more work - from picking the wide variety of colors required, to spending many hours carefully creating the drawing, laying down layer after layer of color to build depth and richness.
What type of materials do you use for your portraits?
PENCILS
We use only the highest quality pencils for our portraits. For graphite portraits, we use Faber-Castell and Derwent pencils, as well as Cretacolor graphite powder. Our colored pencil portraits utilize a combination of Faber-Castell Polychromos, Caran d'Ache, Derwent, and Prismacolor brand colored pencils. We take care to ensure that the pencils and graphite powder we use have high lightfast ratings - meaning that they will not fade, even after decades. SURFACES Our portraits are drawn on high-quality, acid-free surfaces to ensure our work remains vibrant for years to come. Some of the surfaces we work with include Strathmore Bristol Smooth paper and Grafix drafting film. We will determine the type of surface that is most appropriate based on your reference photo and our combined vision for the portrait. Are you an experienced artist?
I'm a completely self-taught artist, having loved drawing since I was a small child. In my teenage years, since I was an avid birder at the time, my focus turned to drawing wild birds in the medium of colored pencils.
I have returned to the world of art in the last couple of years, tackling a new-to-me medium in the form of graphite, initially focusing on human portraits. I have also picked up my old friends, colored pencils again, and am greatly enjoying my return to that medium. Drawing is my happy place - I love bringing my subjects to life in front of me! How do I commission a portrait?
It's really simple! Just email us with your request, including the portrait size, desired number of subjects, and your preferred reference photo(s). If you have one specific photo you would like us to draw, but it isn't the best quality, it is helpful to send us additional, higher quality photos that can be used alongside to help improve the realism of the finished drawing.
Once we have agreed on the portrait details, we will provide you with a contract to sign. A 50% deposit is required up front. We will provide progress photos of the drawing throughout the process. Once the portrait is completed to both our satisfaction, the rest of the commission fee is required to be paid prior to delivery - or upon pick-up - of the finished piece. What is included in the commission price?
The commission fee covers the cost of the materials and the time spent creating the drawing itself. Matting and framing of the portrait are not included in the commission pricing. You will receive the portrait in an archival quality plastic sleeve that will protect the portrait from damage until you have it matted and framed.
